For the treatment of injuries and chronic pain, I often combine acupuncture and Tui Na massage (Chinese Medical massage) which helps speed up recovery and enhances clinical results.
Recent studies show that acupuncture effectively treats sports injuries such as back pain, neck pain, shin splints and tennis elbow. A lot of professional sports teams employ acupuncturists to speed up healing times and to resolve stubborn problems.
Acupuncture is also extremely beneficial for treating longer term chronic painful conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, frozen shoulder, neuralgia, migraines and chronic back pain. It has been highlighted in scientific studies to stimulate the release of serotonins and endorphins (the body’s natural pain killers) which aid pain relief and promote healing.
Tui Na massage is a branch of Chinese medicine which uses massage to treat specific pain and stiffness. It is administered through light clothing. The combination of acupuncture and massage helps to reduce pain and restore mobility.
A range of exercises is also provided as part of the treatment, where appropriate to help recovery and improve range of movement.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends acupuncture for:
- Lower back pain
- Tennis elbow
The aims of treatment are to:
- Help to restore mobility
- Improve blood circulation locally
- Reduce pain
- Relax muscles and relieve spasms
